According to body language expert Judy James, Prince William and Kate Middleton showed signs of tension at the 2026 BAFTA Awards amid the arrest of former Prince Andrew.
James told the English-language publication HELLO! that although the Prince and Princess of Wales wore appropriately stately looks at the London event, there were some signs that they were behaving in a way that was not quite their usual manner.
According to Judy, the couple did not behave in the way that members of the monarchy usually behave on the red carpet.
The members of the royal family in the photo are walking side by side, with their arms hanging loosely by their sides, and the closeness of their dangling palms suggests a desire to perform those signature short touches with which they often support each other at such events, James explained. “However, instead of touching, we see the fingers of William’s right hand slightly bent so that the index finger touches the thumb, which hints at a self-soothing ritual,” the expert added.

James also said that 43-year-old William at one point at the BAFTA Awards ceremony showed “some anxiety”: “his lips were drawn in and his brow was slightly furrowed.”
The prince was dressed in a burgundy velvet evening jacket by Giorgio Armani and black trousers, and his wife shone in a soft pink dress by Gucci.
The royal couple did not communicate with press upon arrival at the awards ceremony.
