On Thursday, August 14, Buckingham Palace released a new portrait of Princess Anne to mark her 75th birthday: she was born on August 15. The picture was taken in July at Gatcombe Park, the princess’s private residence in Gloucestershire. Photographer John Swanell has traditionally taken pictures of Anne on her birthdays for decades. He has previously photographed the princess on her 40th birthday in 1990, 50th in 2000, 60th in 2010 and 70th in 2020.

According to Swanell’s website, the late Princess Diana personally commissioned him to photograph her with her sons Prince William and Prince Harry in 1994. He was later asked to photograph Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, for a postage stamp commemorating their wedding, and to take a photo of the Queen Mother for a postage stamp commemorating her 100th birthday. He also took portraits of Queen Elizabeth for her Golden and Diamond Jubilees.

Swanell’s new portrait of Princess Anne is the second official image released to mark her 75th birthday. On August 8, a week before the big day, Buckingham Palace unveiled a new portrait of Anne in a tiara with her husband, Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Lawrence.
