Miriam Margolyes claims Leonardo DiCaprio was “dismissive” to Claire Danes after she fell in love with him on the set of a film. Margolyes played the nanny in Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film “Romeo and Juliet,” opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, who played the lovers. The film quickly became one of the most popular modern adaptations of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy.

Behind the scenes of filming, Claire, who was 17 at the time of filming, fell in love with her 22-year-old co-star Leonardo, but rumors swirled that they didn’t always get along.
We kind of ignored each other sometimes. “It was too serious for us to accept our feelings,” Claire later told Glamour magazine.
Miriam Margolyes co-starred as Juliet’s nursemaid in the film and shared her reflections on the young couple’s relationship in her 2021 memoir, It’s True.
“It was obvious to all of us that she truly loved her Romeo, but Leonardo wasn’t in love with her,” Miriam wrote. “She wasn’t his type at all. He didn’t know how to handle her crush. He wasn’t sensitive to her feelings, dismissive, and could be quite nasty in his quest to escape, while Claire was completely sincere and so open. It was painful to watch, he was arrogant, – Miriam noted.
