In mid-March, it became known that 27-year-old Slava Kopeikin was invited to play the role of the young rapper Basta in the upcoming film “BASTA. Start of the Game.” Filming has already begun and is taking place in Rostov-on-Don, where the legendary musician Vasily Vakulenko was born and raised. The creative team will stay in Rostov until mid-May, and then the set will move to Moscow.

The director of the project is Stas Ivanov, who explores the formation of subcultures of the 90s and 2000s in the new film. And he says Rostov can be considered the “cradle” of Russian hip-hop.
It was a real subcultural boom. With the emergence of the hip-hop movement, young people found an accessible way to escape the routine, problems at school, and home in street culture. They found a way to be vibrant, cool, and interesting. This is actually what we’re talking about – the emergence of this style in the south of Russia – in Rostov-on-Don, which I consider one of the cradles of Russian hip-hop.

Besides Slava Kopeikin, the project will feature Ksenia Treister, Yuri Nasonov, Egor Kenzhametov, Alexandra Ursulyak and Vasily Neverov.
