Last Friday, March 20, American actor Nicholas Brendon, famous for his role as Xander Harris in the cult series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, passed away. The screen star was 54 years old – he died just under a month before his 55th birthday, which he would have celebrated on April 12. The sad news was confirmed today by the actor’s family in an official post on social media:
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon, Brendon’s family said, noting that he died in his sleep “of natural causes.”
Nevertheless, the actor had many health problems. In 2023, Brendon admitted that he had suffered a heart attack and was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. In addition, due to an addiction to alcohol and illegal drugs, the actor developed cauda equina syndrome. Due to compression of the spinal nerve roots located in the lower part of the spinal cord, he had to undergo several spine surgeries over the years. And in November 2025, he underwent knee surgery. And, according to his family, until the last minutes of his life, the actor “took medications and received treatment for his diagnosis and looked to the future with optimism.”

Our family asks that you respect our privacy during this time as we mourn his loss and honor the memory of a man who lived a full life, had a rich imagination, and a big heart. “Thank you to everyone who showed love and support,” his family said in a statement.
Before getting into acting, Brandon tried several professions: he worked as a plumber’s assistant, a waiter, and a kindergarten teacher. His acting career began in the late 90s, and his real breakthrough came in 1997, when the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired. In the series, which ran until 2003, Nicholas played Xander Harris, the main character’s best friend. The character didn’t possess supernatural powers, but was always there when the team needed support. This role earned the actor three Emmy Award nominations and the love of audiences worldwide.
Besides “Buffy,” Brendon’s filmography includes roles in such series as “Kitchen Confidential,” “Criminal Minds,” “Without a Trace,” “Private Practice,” and “Falsification.” The actor also voiced a character in the Disney animated series “American Dragon: Jake Long” and starred in the films “Bound” and “A Christmas Killer.”
In recent years, Nicholas Brendon has retired from active participation in the film industry and focused on his creative work, becoming interested in painting. He traveled extensively throughout the United States, organized fan meet-ups, sang in karaoke clubs, and maintained warm relationships with his “Buffy” co-stars. A week before his death, he congratulated Sarah Michelle Gellar (who played Buffy) on social media and published joint photos with Charisma Carpenter and Alyson Hannigan.
