Queen Sonja of Norway has been hospitalized due to heart problems. On Wednesday, May 27, the Norwegian Royal House announced that the 88-year-old monarch is undergoing treatment for heart failure and atrial fibrillation. The Queen was fitted with a pacemaker in January 2025.
Her Majesty The Queen was hospitalized today at the National Hospital due to heart problems, the official statement said.
The Queen has cancelled her official engagements, including a scheduled meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Previously, in January 2025, Queen Sonja was fitted with a pacemaker after she developed atrial fibrillation during a skiing holiday, forcing her to be airlifted to a hospital in Lillehammer. Three months later, while on Easter holiday at her private chalet in the Jotunheimen mountains, the Queen again had to be airlifted to the hospital due to shortness of breath.

The Queen’s husband, King Harald V, has also faced numerous health problems in recent years. In 2022, he underwent leg surgery, was diagnosed with COVID-19 in 2022 and 2023, and was fitted with a pacemaker in 2024. Most recently, in February 2026, the King was hospitalized due to an infection and dehydration while on a family holiday in Tenerife.
