The Norwegian Royal Family is celebrating the 25th wedding anniversary of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit. On August 25, 2001, the couple tied the knot in Oslo Cathedral—today this date marks their silver wedding anniversary.
In honor of the anniversary, the Royal Court published a celebratory post on its official social media account. The post is accompanied by a recent joint photo of the couple: in the picture, Haakon and Mette-Marit are captured in an informal setting in a garden. The Crown Princess is wearing a light yellow jumper and a white skirt with blue flowers, while the Crown Prince is wearing a casual blue shirt. The post contains congratulations.

However, the special occasion had to be celebrated without any large-scale public events. The gala evening and receptions have been postponed due to the Crown Princess’s health. In June, Mette-Marit underwent a complex lung transplant due to a worsening of her chronic pulmonary fibrosis. Now the Crown Prince’s wife continues her rehabilitation course, so the couple is spending the anniversary privately, with their family.
The situation was complicated by another event: on the eve of the anniversary, 89-year-old King Harald V, Haakon’s father, was urgently hospitalized in the National Hospital of Oslo with a diagnosis of hemolytic anemia. According to the Royal Palace, the monarch’s condition has worsened, but remains stable at this time. Crown Prince Haakon is therefore temporarily acting as Regent of Norway.
The celebrations are taking place against the backdrop of a serious reputational crisis. The country is still reeling from the legal proceedings against Marius Borg Høiby, Mette-Marit’s eldest son from a previous relationship. Earlier this year, he was convicted of rape, which sparked widespread public outcry.
