After an eight-year romance with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin that never ended in marriage, the Fifty Shades of Grey star admits she wants a real family and children. In an interview with Vogue, Dakota says she’s ready for this new stage in her life.
I hope it happens. I’ve always felt, especially in the last few years, that there’s a soul that wants to come out. And I hope I’m lucky enough to be able to do it.
Johnson admits that her desire to become a mother is especially strong when she’s surrounded by friends who have given birth, including Saoirse Ronan and Jessie Buckley. Johnson worked with both of them on the set of Alice Rohrwacher’s Three Incestuous Sisters on the Italian island of Stromboli. Both Saoirse and Jesse came to the set with their children:
It’s hard to be around your best friends, even on set, when they each have a child, and, you know, everyone starts a family and things don’t work out the way I thought. But it’s okay. I hope everything will work out. I just continue to learn and become a stronger woman.

When asked about what’s going on in Dakota’s personal life now, she preferred to remain silent, explaining it this way:
I’m obsessed with people not knowing where I am and what I’m doing. I’m too open, sensitive, and involved. I don’t… I can’t handle this.
Dakota Johnson’s personal life has been one of the most talked about topics in the tabloids for the past two years, although the actress herself has never commented on it publicly. For almost eight years, from 2017 to June 2025, she was in a relationship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. The couple was considered one of the most private in Hollywood: rare joint appearances, no interviews about the romance. According to People, the breakup “felt final.” Sources explained the breakup by a difference in their views on the future: Johnson wanted children, and Martin, who already has adult children – 22-year-old Apple and 20-year-old Moses from his marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow – allegedly “closed that chapter” in his life.
In December 2025, Johnson was first spotted with singer Role Model (real name – Tucker Pillsbury, 29). Paparazzi caught them dining in Los Angeles, they celebrated New Year’s together, and in April they were photographed kissing in a parking lot. The actress’s mother, Melanie Griffith, publicly called Pillsbury “amazing” and approved of the relationship. In August 2026, People reported that the couple had split after less than a year of dating.
In September, Johnson found herself at the center of new rumors: paparazzi photographed her and Machine Gun Kelly (Colson Baker) separately entering Taylor Swift’s apartment in Tribeca, New York City. According to TMZ, Swift was out of town at the time. A People insider later revealed that the couple were “crazy about each other” and that they met at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey’s wedding, which took place on July 3, 2026, at Madison Square Garden. Neither Johnson nor Baker confirmed these rumors.
